Curricula and classroom practice seldom provide sufficient opportunities for students to reflect upon generative principles embodied in common mathematical instruments. This study investigates students’ understanding of the number line, focusing on the meaning of interval size, and explores effective methodology supporting elicitation and remediation of students’ implicit relations to this ubiquitous representation.
